Hookahs are water pipes that are used to smoke specially made tobacco that comes in different flavors, such as apple, mint, cherry, chocolate, coconut, licorice, cappuccino, and watermelon. People often think smoking through a hookah is a safer and more socially acceptable way to use tobacco products. For this month’s issue of “Did you know that…” we would like to share a few facts pertaining to Hookah.
Did you know that…
• Smoking tobacco through a hookah is no safer than in cigarettes
• Water in the pipe cools the smoke, but does not filter out the chemicals or nicotine
• Pipes are often shared in groups and there’s no guarantee the hoses are disinfected, so you’re at greater risk for infection in general
• Hookah smoking still puts patients at risk for periodontal issues
