As oral health care professionals, it is our duty to educate our patients.
Cancer is second to heart disease as the leading cause of deaths among Americans. The Human Papillomavirus, better known as HPV, is known to cause cervical cancer.
What you may not know, is that HPV also puts patients at risk for oropharyngeal cancer (oral cancer).
Routine oral cancer screenings performed by your dentist and hygienist, limiting sexual partners, and not smoking are controllable, preventative measures to help educate patients. There are screenings and vaccines available for prevention, and proactive measures for both girls and boys. Patents can follow up with their physicians to discuss guidelines that should be followed to prevent this infection.
